Kindergartners, 1st and 2nd graders will no longer be unlawfully suspended: GBLS reaches settlement with Boston Public Schools. GBLS is happy to announce that on November 15, 2018 our clients and Boston Public Schools Interim Superintendent Laura Perille signed a settlement agreement wherein BPS agrees to: 1) no longer suspend kindergartners, first graders, or second graders; 2) to suspend third, fourth, and fifth graders only for very serious offenses; and 3) agrees to create, in collaboration with community groups, professional development trainings designed to increase the use of non-exclusionary, alternative discipline. Nearly eighteen months ago, GBLS had approached BPS with a class action complaint regarding their practice of suspending students without any due process, in violation of state law. BPS asked GBLS to delay filing the complaint and instead committed to negotiating a comprehensive settlement.
