Family Law Unit

Mission

The Family Law Unit’s mission is to provide high quality legal services to clients to help them achieve safety, stability and financial support, and through community work to empower clients and communities to have safe environments in which to live and raise children, free of poverty, violence and discrimination. To accomplish this, we:

● represent individual victims of domestic violence in court actions 
● provide advice and make referrals for other legal and non-legal services
● collaborate with community-based service providers
● engage in community legal education, and
● represent clients in systemic law reform efforts


Client Representation

The Family Law Unit represents primarily victims of domestic violence to obtain:

● restraining orders (for themselves and their children) and safety planning
● divorce
● custody and safe visitation orders
● legal acknowledgment of paternity
● child support 
● relocation legal counseling for victims fleeing batterers
● assistance with the Department of Social Services
● guardianship of minors
